Today’s bombings in Baghdad appear to be part of a campaign by Sunni insurgents to undermine trust in a Shiite-led government following the US departure.
? A daily summary of global reports on security issues.
?A series of bombings in Baghdad today killed 14 people, bringing Iraq’s 2012 death toll up to at least 170 people less than a month into the country’s first year without American troops on the ground since 2003.
The Associated Press reports that several explosive-laden cars were detonated in the neighborhoods of Sadr City and Shula and the district of Hurriya. Seventy people were wounded in the attacks, which all targeted predominantly Shiite areas.
The recent attacks are suspected of being a part of a campaign by Sunni insurgents targeting Shiite communities and Iraqi security forces in order to “undermine public confidence” in the Shiite-led government’s ability to protect Iraqis without American troops to back them up, according to AP.
The Washington Post reports that, also today, gunmen killed Police Capt. Hassan Abdullah al Timimi and his family in their home, then set off two bombs as they left, according to a local pollice commander.?
According to Agence France-Presse, the Al Qaeda front group, the Islamic State of Iraq, vowed further attacks against Shiites in an online forum yesterday.
“The violent attacks against the Rawafid (the name used for Shiites by Sunni extremists) will continue,” Al-Qaeda front group the Islamic State of Iraq said in a statement, while claiming responsibility for attacks on Shiite pilgrims over the past month.
“The lions of the Islamic State of Iraq (will not cease their operations)… as long as the Safavid government continues its war. We will spill rivers of their blood as reciprocity.”
The jihadists often invoke Iran’s Safavid past, referring to the Shiite dynasty that ruled Persia between the 16th and 18th centuries, and conquered part of Iraq, when denouncing the Baghdad government, which they say is controlled by Tehran.

NEW YORK ? Sergio Mendes, who scored an Oscar nomination for his song “Real In Rio,” says the animated film will most likely have a sequel.
Mendes said “Rio” director Carlos Saldanha may want to tie the sequel to the 2014 World Cup, which will take place in Brazil.
“I think the plan is for the movie to come three or four months before the World Cup,” Mendes said Tuesday afternoon.
“Fox has been talking about (it) and it looks like it’s going to happen,” he continued. “We’re going to have a meeting I think next week and Carlos is coming to town to tell us the story, and it looks like it’s a go.”
Fox didn’t immediately respond to an email request seeking comment on the possibility of a sequel.
Mendes and Saldanha are from Brazil. Mendes said creating music for the film ? about birds adventuring to Rio de Janeiro with the voices of Jesse Eisenberg and Anne Hathaway ? was special “because that’s my hometown.”
Mendes shares his nomination with Siedah Garrett and Carlinhos Brown. He said he’s not feeling pressure to create new music for the “Rio” sequel following his Oscar nod.
“I take one thing at a time,” he said. “Right now I’m celebrating.”

(Reuters) ? Nintendo Co Ltd posted a sharp drop in quarterly profit and forecast a bigger-than-expected full-year loss, its first at an operating level, as it battles a strong yen and its games devices lose ground to gadgets such as Apple’s iPhone.
The creator of the Super Mario franchise dominated the video games industry for years with its DS handheld players and Wii home consoles, but is now struggling to keep up as more versatile smartphone and tablet sales boom.
“To say that (the days of consoles) are over is likely an overstatement, but social network and Internet delivered games are growing and structurally changing the future of the industry, which is a strong wind against Nintendo,” said Shigeo Sugawara, senior investment manager at Sompo Japan Nipponkoa Asset Management.
Nintendo now expects an annual operating loss of 45 billion yen ($575 million), dwarfing expectations of a 4.2 billion yen loss, based on the average of 21 analyst forecasts.
“Their time of growth (from consoles) is over, and, while I don’t think the company will cease to exist, if they don’t move into new categories, they will no doubt lose the great scale they’ve amassed,” said Mitsushige Akino, chief fund manager at Ichiyoshi Investment Management in Tokyo.
Nintendo cut its forecast for annual sales of its ageing Wii console to 10 million devices from 12 million, and for the 3DS handheld games device to 14 million from 16 million.
“We had higher expectations for the year-end season, but failed to meet them,” President Satoru Iwata told reporters in Osaka.
Poor sales forced Nintendo to slash the price of its much-anticipated 3DS handheld games device in August, just six months after its launch.
The move halted its record of making profits on games hardware as well as software, a business model that took operating income to a high of 555 billion yen in 2008/09.
Nintendo also faces tougher competition in the home console market from Sony Corp’s Move and Microsoft Corp’s Kinect, and Iwata said consumers were more eager than ever to seek out bargains in the harsh economic environment.
The company plans to launch the Wii’s successor, the Wii U, in Japan, the United States, Europe and Australia in the year-end season, Iwata told reporters.
But with cloud-based gaming emerging as a potential threat, Nintendo may have trouble generating excitement about its new product, some analysts say. Google is taking steps into gaming with Google TV, while Apple is thought to be preparing a new iPad and possibly a smart TV that could be game-changers for the industry.
“We think we need to consider the possibility that home consoles could become a thing of the past,” Citigroup analyst Soichiro Fukuda wrote in a recent report.
“We think the direction taken by marketing trendsetter Apple will be very important and we will be watching the company’s announcements at future events with interest.”
PROFIT FALLS
Nintendo’s profit slumped to 40.9 billion yen for the traditionally strong October-December period, compared with a consensus estimate for 52 billion yen, based on a survey of three analysts by Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.
The results came a day after Apple blew away Wall Street’s expectations with its own quarterly earnings.
Shares in Nintendo have halved to below 11,000 yen since the beginning of the financial year in April, hit by weak 3DS sales and market disappointment with the Wii U next-generation home console, unveiled at the E3 games show in June and set to go on sale late this year. At their peak, in late 2007, the shares traded at 73,200 yen.
Last week, the stock dipped to 10,020 yen, the lowest since April 2004, before either the DS or Wii were launched.

CAIRO ? Hundreds of thousands thronged major squares across Egypt on Wednesday, marking the first anniversary of the uprising that toppled Hosni Mubarak with rallies that laid bare the divisions that have replaced the unity of last year’s revolt.
Cairo’s Tahrir Square, the epicenter of the 18 days of protests against Mubarak, was transformed into the focal point of the rivalry between revolutionary activists intent on showing they can still mobilize the street, and the Muslim Brotherhood, who emerged as Egypt’s dominant political force after a landslide victory in parliamentary elections.
The secular activists want continued protests to force the immediate ouster of the generals who took power after Mubarak’s fall, saying they are just as dictatorial as the former president. The activists touted their powerful turnout as a sign they can pressure the Brotherhood, who they fear will accommodate the military in order to ensure their own political dominance.
“I have hope that these marches will be a message to the Brotherhood as much as the military council,” said Sahar Abdel-Mohsen, who walked 3 1/2 miles (5 kilometers) in a giant march across Cairo to Tahrir.
“We all know even if the Brotherhood are strong, the military council is still stronger. … What we all want is an end to military rule,” she said.
Both sides were intent on bringing out as many supporters as possible to show their weight in a nation still reeling from the aftershocks of Mubarak’s ouster.
The Islamists got off to a strong start, taking up positions in the morning and claiming the right to police the square, with Brotherhood volunteers checking the bags of those entering.
From a large stage with 10 loudspeakers, they blared religious songs and chants of “Allahu akbar,” setting a tone of celebration for what they called the successes of the revolution, particularly the newly elected parliament.
But a dozen large marches organized by secular groups converged on Tahrir from various parts of the city, chanting “Down, down with military rule!” and filling boulevards as passers-by joined in along the way. The “non-Islamists” swarmed into the downtown plaza before sunset, jam-packing it to outnumber the Islamists.
Some marched to the sober beat of drums to pay tribute to the hundreds of protesters killed over the past year ? by Mubarak’s regime and the military ? and to emphasize that this was not a joyous anniversary, with so many demands for democratic reform left unachieved.
Many wore masks with pictures of the faces of slain protesters. Once in the square they erected a pharaonic-style wooden obelisk with the names of the “martyrs.”
“I am not here to celebrate. I am here for a second revolution,” said Attiya Mohammed Attiya, an unemployed father of four. “The military council is made of remnants of the Mubarak regime. We will only succeed when we remove them from power.”
Together the two sides packed Tahrir in one of the biggest gatherings since the height of the protests against Mubarak and the frenzied celebrations on the night he fell on Feb. 11. There were no army troops or police present, a sign the military was looking to avoid an eruption of new clashes after deadly violence in October, November and December.
The competition for influence between the secular forces and the Brotherhood centers on the ruling military, led by Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi, Mubarak’s defense minister for 20 years.
The revolutionaries say the generals must surrender power to civilians immediately, accusing them of perpetuating their former mentor’s authoritarian system, bungling the transition and committing large-scale human rights violations. The Brotherhood are willing to accept the generals’ promise to step down by the end of June.
The revolutionaries, however, have been unable to agree on an alternative plan for the handover.
The Brotherhood and other Islamists have been the biggest beneficiaries of the military’s handling of the transition. Elections held over the past two months gave the Brotherhood just under half the seats in the new parliament that convened Monday, and the ultraconservative Salafis snapped up another quarter. Liberals and left-leaning groups credited with leading the protests that ousted Mubarak garnered less than 10 percent.
In the eyes of the secularists, the Islamists’ triumph underlined their obsession with power after decades of persecution by successive governments, as well as their waning interest in pressing the demands of the “revolution” for real change to dismantle the legacy of 60 years of autocratic rule. Many fear the Brotherhood will compromise with the military, ceding it future political power in order to seal their own dominant status.
“A message to the Brotherhood: The revolutionaries love the square more than they love parliament,” read one poster.
“For those who won in the elections, now is time to mete out justice for those killed,” a protester shouted.
After the arrival of the secular-led marches, the tone of the Brotherhood speakers changed slightly. Earlier Brotherhood speeches were strongly religious ? one speaker proclaimed the need to face Egypt’s “enemies” who aim to strike against Islam. Later in the day, speakers underlined the need for justice for slain protesters and for the military to hand over power to civilians ? issues closer to those of the secular activists.
Many of the secular youth groups called for overnight sit-ins in Tahrir to press their demands. Such gatherings have been hit by violent security crackdowns in the past. Islamists said they would hold “celebrations” in the square until Friday, though not a sit-in.
Khaled Abol-Naga, a movie actor and protester, said that despite the differences, the square was united Wednesday in the desire for an end to military rule. Even the Islamists want this because they don’t want to lose their credibility, he said.
“The pact between the Islamists and the military won’t survive this pressure,” he added.
Ismail Badawi, a Brotherhood backer, said he was determined to see the military leave power, but that must be achieved through parliament, not the street.
“Parliament is the voice of the nation,” he said. “We are here to support parliament.”
The secular-led marches attracted a broad cross-section of society, similar to the largest anti-Mubarak protests. Young people, university students, middle-class men and women joined the processions.
“Tantawi, come and kill more revolutionaries. We want your execution,” they chanted, alluding to the more than 80 protesters killed by army troops since October. Thousands of civilians have been hauled before military tribunals since Mubarak’s ouster.
“Don’t mess with the people,” others chanted. “Go, field marshal.”
Pro-reform leader Mohammed ElBaradei participated in prayers at a mosque with one group of marchers before the procession set off toward Tahrir.
Unlike many of the demonstrators, ElBaradei, a Nobel Peace Prize laureate, said the immediate return of the military to the barracks was not the main issue.
Instead, he told The Associated Press the focus should be on “the revolution’s goals” ? drafting “a proper constitution,” fixing the economy, establishing independent media and courts, and prosecuting those who killed protesters.
Emad el-Hadidi, a pharmacist, watched from the sidewalk as the marchers went by. The activists were too hurried and should give the military time to hand over power, he said.
But he also admired the protesters, his eyes tearing up because he felt he was too old at 66 to join them. “We are a generation brought up with fear,” he said.

RALEIGH, N.C. ? The key battleground state of North Carolina is still within President Barack Obama’s grasp, despite Democratic Gov. Beverly Perdue’s surprise decision to drop her re-election campaign.
Obama has been running commercials in the state for months, and the Democrats have staked so much on repeating his 2008 success in North Carolina that their presidential nomination convention will be held in Charlotte.
“It’s helpful news for Obama rather than problematic news,” John Dinan, a political science professor at Wake Forest University, said of Perdue’s announcement Thursday. “You’d expect the Obama campaign would rather run with a strong gubernatorial candidate on the ballot, and by all accounts, Perdue was not a strong candidate.”
Perdue, the first woman elected governor in North Carolina history, said she worried a fight with Republicans over public education would become too political if she tried for a second term. But Perdue entered the election year with political baggage, including a campaign finance investigation, sagging poll numbers and a tough rematch campaign against an opponent she narrowly beat in 2008, when Obama’s coattails helped Democrats across the state.
“North Carolina’s a swing state, they can’t afford to lose it for the presidential race,” said Michael Munger, a political science professor at Duke University who ran for governor as a Libertarian in 2008. “I would guess some senior Democratic people strongly suggested she spend more time with her grandchildren.”
Four years ago, Obama shocked many national pundits by becoming the first Democratic presidential nominee to carry the state since Jimmy Carter in 1976, defeating Republican Sen. John McCain by just 14,177 votes out of more than 4.3 million ballots cast.
Perdue, then the state’s lieutenant governor, benefited from Obama’s highly organized effort to boost voter turnout, an effort the president will look to repeat regardless of whether the Democratic gubernatorial nominee is an incumbent.
“I don’t think the president’s 2012 chances are affected by this in any way,” said Andy Taylor, a political science professor at North Carolina State University. “The presidential race is the dog and the gubernatorial race is the tail, and the dog is going to be wagging the tail.”
Obama’s win here was the first in 32 years for a Democratic nominee for president. He praised Perdue for breaking down barriers during her political career.
“For over 25 years, she has fought for the people of the Tar Heel state ? working to transform the state’s public schools, improve the health care system, protect and attract jobs for members of the military and their families, and create the jobs of the future,” Obama said in a statement.
Perdue, a former school teacher, said her decision was about protecting public education from spending cuts by the GOP-led legislature.
“The thing I care about most right now is making sure that our schools and schoolchildren do not continue to be the victims of shortsighted legislative actions and severe budget cuts inflicted by a legislative majority with the wrong priorities,” Perdue said in a statement.
The statement made no mention of what Perdue, 65, planned to do in the future. Perdue campaign spokesman Marc Farinella said the governor declined to speak to reporters Thursday because she was spending time with her family after making “this very difficult decision.”
“For now she wants her statement to speak for itself,” he said.
Perdue’s decision means it will be the first time a sitting North Carolina governor has failed to get elected to a second term since voters gave chief executives authority to succeed themselves in the 1970s.
“All the Democrats’ waters rose with Obama in 2008,” said Brian Nick, a Republican strategist working for likely GOP gubernatorial nominee Pat McCrory. “It would be a fallacy to think the governor’s race is going to affect the presidential campaign in North Carolina.”
Perdue has faced high unemployment, consistently weak approval numbers, a string of political defeats and the indictment of two close aides and a family friend in a campaign finance scandal that is continuing to unfold. She has also made some well-publicized gaffes, like a joking suggestion last year that congressional elections should be suspended for two years to ease partisan gridlock.
North Carolina is crucial to Obama’s re-election strategy, with a win there relieving the need to carry more-traditional battleground states such as Florida and Ohio.
Perdue is listed as the co-chair of steering and host committee membership for the 2012 convention. DNC officials were quick to say Thursday that Perdue’s withdrawal from the governor’s race will have no effect on the September event.
The governor has not been closely involved in the convention planning and was not present at a DNC media conference in Charlotte last week announcing that President Obama would give his acceptance speech to Bank of America Stadium.
“They made the decision to site the convention in Charlotte knowing that Beverly Perdue was facing an uphill fight,” said Steven Greene, a political science professor at N.C. State. “That was already factored into their decision.”
Perdue may try to maintain a low profile through the end of her term early next year. After issuing a statement declaring her intention not to run, Perdue holed up in the governor’s mansion with her aides.
Mark Johnson, the governor’s deputy communications director, said the governor has no public events scheduled for the next week.
“Anything beyond next week is tentative,” Johnson said.

Andrew Revkin reports today on the engagement of Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility (PEER) to the Climate Science Legal Defense Fund created by Professor Scott Mandia, aka ?Supermandia? as he sees himself in the photo below.
Professor Scott Mandia – Founder of the Climate Science Legal Defense Fund
From Scott Mandia?s blog-he captions this photo at left: The Caped Climate Crusader: Battling the evil forces of global warming deniers. ?Faster than global T rise, more powerful than a stranded polar bear, able to leap over rising seas in a single bound.?
I was really rather surprised that Revkin covered this nonsense, particularly since the ?fund? is primarily about Mandia?s adoration of Dr. Michael Mann, and his desire that his public emails from the University of Virgina not be exposed to scrutiny by the State Attorney General of Virginia to determine if he used research funds properly or not. PEER has made a number of public pronouncements defending Mann and claims that scientific integrity would be damaged if the attorney general is allowed to view those emails written on the public dime.
This probably explains why Mandia needs to wear hip waders as part of his costume.
The University of Virginia reportedly has spent upwards of a million dollars keeping those emails on double secret probation, so it would seem the old adage of ?where there?s smoke there?s fire? might truly apply here.
In Revkin?s Q&A e-mail interview with Jeff Ruch (video interview), the longtime executive director of PEER, it emerges that they have some pretty odd thinking on FOI as it applies to universities:
Q: Finally, when the issue is the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA), there?s a murky line between what is fishing and what isn?t. Many FOIA requests of green groups over the years could be cast as such. This is one reason the Union of Concerned Scientists, for example, has walked a fine line in its statements on abuse of FOIA. Should a researcher using a state university e-mail address and working under federal grants be entitled to presume his/her correspondence is ?private? (as described below)?
A: The central issue is whether the subject of the inquiry is public business. Generally, scientific articles submitted in the author?s name with a disclaimer that the work does not represent the institution falls outside what is official business. Our main concern is that industry-funded groups and law firms are seeking to criminalize the peer review process by obtaining internal editorial comments of reviewers as a means to impeach or impugn scientists.
The grants themselves and the grant reports are public but a federal grant does not transform a university lab into an executive branch agency ? which is the ambit of FOIA.
By the way, as an adjunct to our whistleblower practice, PEER makes extensive use of FOIA to force disclosure of matters other wise buried in agency cubicles. A good example of one our science-based FOIA [requesets] is this.
Bishop Hill writes of this passage:
??seeking to criminalize the peer review process by obtaining internal editorial comments of reviewers as a means to impeach or impugn scientists?? Huh?
It can?t be said often enough. If you want public money you have to accept public oversight.
I agree. It seems the issue here is simple; they want the money, but they don?t want to answer any questions about how that money is used.
This is part of the ?entitlement mindset? that has pervaded public employees in recent years, and it is becoming tiresome.? Sunlight on the process is the only way accountability can be maintained.
